Engagement photos are an integral part of the wedding photography experience. Engagement photos have several advantages. From a photographer stand point, they really help us get to know our clients before their wedding day. After each engagement session, we closely review each image and make notes about how our couple interacted while being photographed. Some people are shy and need more direction. Others have no problem being intimate and don’t care if the camera is on them. Either way, we gain a great insight into the personalities of our clients which allows us to better serve them on their wedding day. Engagement photos also help ease our client’s minds in regards to what it’s like to be professionally photographed. Many tell me how much fun they had and are now excited for the wedding day photographs.
We really try to simplify how we approach engagement sessions. Once we have a consultation with our clients and get an idea of about their style, we then choose a location. Often locations are urban (downtown) or taken out in the countryside with lots of natural beauty surrounding them. Engagement sessions usually last about 90 minutes and we encourage our clients to bring two looks. We recommend a casual look and then something a bit dressy. Having the two looks really gives a lot of photos to choose from. Within a week our clients will receive a link in which they can download their final portraits.
Often our clients have Pinterest Boards which we love to see before the engagement session. This really helps us hone in on our client’s vision of what they want from their session. Often their Pinterest board is full of ideas and props from others engagement sessions they have seen online. When it comes to props like chalk boards or balloons we leave it up to our clients to supply those items because they are so specific to their taste. But we are more than happy to help include them into their session.
At the end of the day, we feel our job is to have a collection of images that tell a story about our clients love for each other and how much fun they have had together.
